Game #2 Ends in Double Overtime

One thing you can say about the Holy Family Green Team… they sure know how to keep its fans excited. The Green team made its first away trip to White Lake as it took on local power St. Patrick. The game before a packed field house was a classic as the home team held on to win in double overtime by a hard faought score of 16 – 15.

Holy Family was a little flat in the first half of the game as the pressure of playing away from the friendly confines of the HF Activity Center might have caused early game jitters. St. Pats took an early 4 – 0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was slightly better played quarter as the HF side were able to score on the St. Pats aggressive defense and at the end of the first half Holy Family had closed the gap to by 3 and St. Pats took a 6 – 3 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter brought more of the same from both squads as defense was the rule and not the exception. St. Pats closed out the quarter on an answered long jump shot that went in and extended the lead by 1 as the score at the end of the third was 10 – 6. Holy Family might have been undermanned and undersized but they never backed down from the powerful St. Patrick team. In one exchange, there was a collision on the wing that resulted in several girls going to the ground but the HF player maintained their dribble and composure and made a difficult jump shot.

The Holy Family fans saw another furious 4th quarter comeback but this time it was their team that made the charge. The defense stiffened even more and the offense showed some signs of life. The offense finally figured out the St. Pats defense and caught up to them with less than two minutes in the game. The two sides took shots at each other’s defense but neither side budged an inch. The game ended in a 12 – 12 tie.

Both teams were emotionally drained at the end of the game. The St. Patrick team scored the first basket of extra session, but Holy family got the equalizer shortly after and the two teams headed to the second extra stanza again tied. During the second overtime Holy Family took the lead on a made free throw. The game stayed this way as St. Pats tried on several attempts to make a basket in close. They were finally rewarded as a shot that was missed was put back in on an offensive rebound. Holy Family tried valiantly to make a just one more basket, but they were just not able to capitalize on their chances.

There were plenty of learning experiences for the team as the team learned what it felt like to lose a game, but more important they learned that every possession is very important and that the game can be won or lost if the execution is not crisp.

The Holy Family Team takes to the road again as the next game is against St. Williams of Walled Lake.

Holy Family Green Team Gets Win #1

It was an extremely exciting game as the Holy Family Green Team narrowly won the first game of the season 20 – 18 against a resilient All Saints team at the Activity Center.

The first half of the game was a very tight contest as both teams played tough defense. Both offenses showed signs of this being an early season game by not executing their respective offenses. The teams went into the halftime intermission tied at 4 as both sides looked a little tired from the early 9:00 am start of the game.

The Holy Family side came out on fire on both sides of the court as they scored all 16 points of the third quarter taking a 20 to 4 advantage into the 4th quarter. The All Saints team went on a tear of their own in the last stanza as they roared all the way back to make it a close game. The All Saints side had a final chance to send the game into overtime but a well-executed out of bounds play resulted in a layup that trickled out as time expired. Both teams played their hearts out and the near capacity crowd was thoroughly entertained.

All of the Holy Family girls played well and the teamwork and resolve showed up in the second half first by taking a big lead and then by holding on to the very end. The game was a very good teaching tool as it showed the girls not to take anyone for granted and to play to the very last second. Second, The coaches learned that the rule for this age bracket is that every girl needs to sit out at least one full quarter and not just combined time that equals a quarter. It almost cost Holy Family the game as it was agreed that Holy Family would play zone defense for the whole fourth quarter and sit out two girls for the whole quarter instead of forfeiting the game.

Next game is against St. Patrick of White Lake.

UCONN Offense

This is our UCONN offensive play. Note that our bigs (our 4 and 5 players) start the play behind the defense. We want to use this play against a 2 -3 or 2 - 1 - 2 zone defense.
